Dickens Mania Commences!

We celebrated Amy's birthday in true Romancing the Tome style on Sunday by attending a Bollywood performance, dining exquisitely at Comme Ça, and watching the first episode of 2007's BBC production of Oliver Twist on Masterpiece Theatre. The casting is fantastic, although we both agreed that Tom Hardy (Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights) is almost too attractive as psychopathic scoundrel Bill Sikes (let's call it the Willoughby Effect). The little boy who plays Oliver is adorable and Timothy Spall as Fagin is utterly creepy. Unfortunately, the Artful Dodger's accent was so thick that we could barely understand a word he said. Following next week's conclusion of Oliver will be David Copperfield starring Daniel Radcliffe. Of course, I'm eagerly awaiting the five episodes of the brand new Little Dorrit, which begins on March 29. --Kim

  1. I ironically called Tom Hardy not "sexy/swarthy" enough to play Heathcliff in W.H. I still believe he was miscast in that role, but I'm actually digging him in Oliver Twist, as it makes more sense why Nancy is so stuck on him despite his terrible deeds.

Hardy was adorable in Guy Ritchie's RocknRolla.

  2. I am reading "Little Dorrit" in hopes of finishing it before the broadcast. "The Old Curiosity Shop" is read. Disappointing that that program is not going to be as long.

  3. I just finished Little Dorrit, too! I'm glad I knew Matthew MacFadyen was the star as I was able to picture him as Arthur Clennam as I read it.

  4. I completely agree with Amy and Kim's assessment on Tom Hardy. He was frightening, and yet... As for Dodger, my roommate kept asking me, "what did he say?" to which I would say, "I don't know. Maybe that's the point?"
